Skinimalism or Back to Basics: The biggest beauty trend of 2021
How many times have you not felt obligated to skip your night treatment, preferring to sink on your couch after a day of "fire"? For many of us the skin care routine sounds like a nightmare… and there is a very good reason why this happens! Before 2020 came and we were all in this new order of things, we spent a lot of time and money on a complex skincare ritual that of course included a long list of cosmetic products.
Quarantine, no matter how tired we are, has allowed us to escape the rush of everyday life and explore more of our skin care, leading to two key changes: 1. as consumers we began to make more conscious decisions about what we put on the face and our body, emphasizing the type and needs of our skin, but even more importantly, 2. we put aside the make-up, giving our face the right attention.
And at this point, you are logically wondering what 2021 has in store for us. In short, minimalism at every level - and in skin care!
According to Pinterest's annual report, Pinterest Predicts for 2021, the main trend that will be of concern to us this year is Skinimalism - a new term that you will hear very often from now on because as things stand, it has come to stay! So if you are looking for this natural, easy and effortless glow on your face, it's time to follow a more minimalist and conscious treatment routine - the so-called "glow-up". In practice, this focuses on the absence of make-up, the restriction of the products you use on a daily basis and the targeted skin care. So time to say goodbye to the over the top makeup trends and fancy packaging, because in 2021 we become simpler and more effective!
What is Skinimalism?
Skinimalism means naturally glowing skin that is achieved with few and good products and minimalist care. Essentially, we get rid of the excessive use of products, which overload the face, disrupting the natural barrier of the skin, eventually leading to outbreaks, dryness, peeling, redness and / or sensitivity.
Even more important, of course, is the perspective with which this philosophy approaches skin problems. In essence, she redefines the term "beauty" and praises feminine nature along with its flaws, speaking openly and without shame about them. A typical example of this is the birth of the acne positivity movement by the activist Lou Northcote, which inspires her followers to feel proud of their acne, by uploading make-up free photos with her pimples on Instagram with the hashtag #FreeThePimple.
But how did we get here?
Everything started with the Korean trend "skip-care" which made its debut in June 2019. It is a treatment method, which came to shake the waters, aiming to eliminate the painstaking Korean treatment 10 steps through the application of reusable products. What does this mean in practice? Use fewer care products with higher efficiency, achieving exactly the same results plus saving time, money, space and less environmental impact - 5 in 1!
And in case this seems difficult, extreme or even impossible, more recently the Japanese skin care company Mirai Clinical began to spread the practice of skin fasting, in free version "skin fasting"! According to her, it is good to let our skin rest from the care products for a while so that it is able to regenerate itself. The argument underlying this theory is that the skin's natural barrier is weakened by the constant use of products, so it takes a period of strict fasting to detoxify and self-regulate.
How do I apply it Skinimalism in practice?
Say no to the Pursuit of Perfection
Starting with the basics, I do not know who needs to hear this, but we all have to come to terms with the fact that our skin will never be perfect and that is perfectly okay! The skin actually has a special texture and pores. The photos that depict flawless skin on social media are just an artistic rendition of the truth that is miles away from reality and literally leads us to an endless pursuit of perfection that does not really exist!
On the other hand, it would not be realistic to ignore all the imperfections, as some skin conditions require some form of intervention. The main issue is to be able to distinguish between the real skin issues that need to be addressed and the fake ones, ie those that emanate from a source of influence on social networks. This way, you can identify the main skin problems you have and focus on addressing them.
Try Face Yoga
Did you know that we have 57 different facial muscles? If not here's a new product just for you! Yes, you heard right! It is a series of exercises, presses and massages that offer a natural way to strengthen the oxygen in the skin cells, increase the blood circulation, release the tension of the face, finally highlighting the natural glow of your face. If you do it regularly, you will see miracles both on your face and on your neck.
Apply Skip-Care
Get rid of anything that does not meet the general goals of your skin. Set care priorities and choose the corresponding natural products, without chemicals or parabens that are friendly to your skin and the planet.
Remember Less is Actually More
On days when you will need to put on a little makeup, keep it simple and natural. Ideally use colored cream or sunscreen and avoid make-up. Emphasize your eyebrows, do not overdo it with mascara and prefer a lip balm instead of lipstick to keep your lips hydrated. If you want, you can include the use of blush.
Apply Basics
Every effort for healthy and radiant skin starts from within you - with a balanced diet, a sufficient amount of water and 8 hours of quality sleep! We can not think of anything more minimalist than this!
Try DIY recipes
