MASKNE: 6 scientifically proven ways to cure it this summer
Have you recently noticed an increase in irritation in the areas of the face covered by the protective mask? If so, let's start with the bad news first: summer is coming off aggressively hot and humid so there may be an outbreak of these symptoms in the coming days. There is good news though: you can treat the irritations from the mask and prevent possible acne outbreaks by applying some basic steps on a daily basis.
Keep reading to learn more about the Maskne effect and discover ways in which you can soothe and protect your skin from intense irritation.
Summer and Maskne go together
Until recently, we may have been able to avoid prolonged use of the mask as we spent most of the day indoors. But this has changed for the better now: Summer has begun and with it our need to spend more time outside the four walls, take a walk in the shops, drink a coffee as we used to and generally live our lives. with a dose of regularity!
So, now, we wear the protective mask more often, for longer and at higher temperatures - creating the ideal conditions of humidity, heat, pressure and friction in the area covered for the growth of bacteria. These in turn clog the pores, trapping excess oil and thus creating inflammation, pimples and blackheads. The medical term for this new type of acne is Maskne (<mask + acne), it definitely came to stay and apparently it concerns us all!
But I have never had acne, how does it affect me? Apart from cases of chronic acne, where the use of the mask can cause exacerbation, several cases have been reported, where even skin without a predisposition to acne have developed redness, pimples or blackheads due to the pressure from the mask. Also, recent research links the use of a protective mask with a number of other skin conditions beyond acne. Dry skin, bursitis and dermatitis are some of them and can occur on otherwise healthy skin.
Fortunately for us, there are some ways we can adopt in our daily lives, able to alleviate or even prevent the annoying symptoms of Maskne.
1. Choose the right mask
The choice of mask plays a crucial role in preventing any skin irritation. So if you wear masks made of synthetic materials, such as nylon or polyester, it's time to replace them with masks that are made from natural fibers, such as cotton, linen or silk. According to research, these fabrics are friendly to the skin, do not irritate it and in addition allow it to breathe better, removing moisture and keeping the skin surface dry.
Of course, it is necessary to take care of the regular cleaning of the mask after each use - especially now that the temperature rises and sweating increases. The importance of this point is typically pointed out by Dr. Candrice Heath, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, stressing that:
"You have to treat the mask like your underwear and wash it often. "You do not want all the sweat, sebum and dirt that accumulates on the skin during the day to stay on the mask and then apply it again on your face."
2. Cleanse your face before and after using the mask
You spend valuable time washing your hands thoroughly throughout the day - but do you do the same with your face? If you already suffer from irritation on the cheeks, nose or chin, do not forget that cleansing soap is your No. 1 ally in your fight against maskne. Start washing your face today before and after applying the mask. Prefer one mild cleanser with active antibacterial ingredients which will effectively remove oil and dirt from the affected area, while keeping the microbiome of your skin healthy.
We suggest you try the refreshing Clarifying Foam cleanser by Medik8. Enriched with an exfoliating blend of mandelic and salicylic acids, this foaming cleanser helps unclog pores and lightly exfoliate skin without causing dryness or irritation. The best; It contains niacinamide, which works soothingly, preventing the production of sebum, as well as tea tree oil, which offers extra antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, leaving the skin soft and velvety.

ATTENTION: Avoid excessive friction during cleansing, as it can cause micro-incisions in the skin, which can be a potential gateway for pathogenic microorganisms. Each time you complete the cleansing, dry your face well by making gentle tampon movements without wiping it hard on the towel.
3. Moisturize but with the right product
After cleansing it is necessary to restore moisture to your skin to avoid any dryness or irritation. It is recommended to use a moisturizer, which contains one of the following ingredients:
- Ceramides. These are the oily molecules located in the stratum corneum and hold the cells together, creating a protective layer that increases the thickness of the skin and retains its moisture.
- Hyaluronic Acid. It is a natural hydrophilic component of the skin that regulates moisture levels thanks to its ability to retain water up to 1000 times its volume. Thus, it ensures rich hydration, "fills" the fine lines and wrinkles from the inside, activates the production of collagen and elastin.
- Dimethicone. It is a silicone-based polymer that forms a thin, protective film on the surface of the skin, moisturizing and retaining moisture even in the most adverse conditions.
ATTENTION: Do not apply, at least not for the summer months, the thick nourishing cream you use during the winter, as this can enhance sebum production. Instead, take care to nourish your skin with a dose of antioxidants, which will offer it the protection it needs against the negative external effects.
Medik8's revolutionary C-Tetra Cream could be a great way to keep your skin hydrated and healthy this summer. Rich in 100% stable form of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, Medik8's revolutionary C-Tetra Cream penetrates deep into the skin, moisturizing the skin and balancing its tone. At the same time, this formula offers strong antioxidant protection, preventing damage from free radicals and protecting the skin from environmental stressors, such as pollution and exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
4. Go make-up free when you wear a mask
Difficult; Yes, but not impossible! Indeed, even if you have never tried it before, now is the time to put your make-up aside and adapt your makeup routine to the new data! So, on days when you will need to put on a little makeup, keep it simple and natural. Ideally use a sebum-regulating cream or a sunscreen with color and avoid make-up so as not to cause further irritation on your face. Above all, do not feel guilty! Remember the pandemic has changed everything, restoring minimalism to all levels - especially in skin care.
5. Avoid new or harsh dermocosmetics
Or just do not expose your skin to any product or process that may make it sensitive! Avoid new or harsh products that may irritate your skin, such as creams with acids, retinol serums, chemical peels and after shave products.
H Dr. Carrie Kovarik, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, recommends using products with active ingredients only at night because due to the blockage, the mask increases the effectiveness of these substances, which can irritate the skin. He adds: "If you have not used retinol in the past, it is better not to start using it at this time. "But even if you are used to retinol, you may need to dilute its use now."
6. Become more regular with professional facial cleansing
If you adjust your treatment routine according to the above scientific instructions, it is certain that your skin will start to respond to the care you show it and will be healthier. However, in many cases, depending on the nature and extent of Maskne, this alone may not be enough. It may be necessary to precede one or more sessions of professional facial cleansing, in order to "unclog" the skin of dead cells and impurities and to become more receptive to the products you apply.
At MEDI WELL, the Deep Cleansing that we apply starts with exfoliation so that we can in the first phase remove the dead keratinocytes. The pores are then opened with a steam generator (vapeur) for 20 to 30 minutes, so that we can remove the pores from the pores without exerting force and causing skin injuries. Once the pores are opened, wrap the thumbs or index fingers of both hands with sterile tissues and begin to extract the sebum. We work meticulously in each area and as soon as the process is completed, we apply high frequency currents to avoid infections. At this point we apply a special soothing mask to reduce the irritation that the person has suffered from the process so far and to tighten the open pores. The procedure is completed by applying a special cream or serum to the skin, depending on the irritation of the skin and of course by applying sunscreen.
